전자사전이 없었던 예전에는 -

중국에 잠깐 와 있는 동안, 책으로는 접할 수 없었던 여러가지 ‘생생한’ 한자들을 접하게 됩니다. 간판, 메뉴판, 상품의 라벨, 광고판, 전광판 등에 쓰여 있는 한자들. 그런 한자들이 도대체 무슨 뜻인지, 그리고 그보다도 대체 어떻게 읽어야 하는지를 알 수 없을 때, 가장 큰 아군이 되어 주는 녀석이 바로 “전자사전”이죠. 그래서 든 생각이, 전자사전이 없던 예전이었다면 과연 중국어 공부가 어떠했을까라는 것이었어요. 전자사전으로 화면에 직접 입력해서 한자를 찾을 수 있게 된 것이 그리 오래 전의 일이 아니니까, 아마도 예전에는 수첩에 적어 놓았다가 집에 돌아와서 한꺼번에 부수를 통해서 종이 사전에서 찾아볼 수 밖에 없을 것 같은데… 역시 언어 공부에 있어서 안 되는 것에 대한 핑계란 있을 수 없는가 봅니다. 불편하다고 공부를 안 하면 남는 것은 후회뿐! 앞으로도 꾸준히 호기심을 유지할 수 있기를… ^^

중국에서의 인턴쉽 경험 쌓기

다른 나라에 나가서 경험을 쌓는다는 일이 생각만큼 쉬운 일은 아니죠... 멋있게 보이고 이상적으로 들리기는 하지만, 막상 가서 해 보면 생각했던 것과 다른 경우가 많이 있고, 아무래도 해외이다보니 한국과 다른 점들 (언어를 포함해서) 때문에 초반에는 적응하느라 시간이 많이 걸리지요.

하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 해외로 해외로 많은 사람들이 경험을 쌓기 위해 나가는 것은? 그럴 만한 값어치가 충분히 있기 때문이죠 - 해외에 나가보면 그 동안 내가 얼마나 좁은 사고 방식과 틀에 박힌 생활에 갇혀 있었는지, 그리고 너무나 당연시 여기고 있었던 부분들은 무엇인지를 알게 되고, 내 스스로 무엇이 부족한지, 어떤 부분을 갈고 닦아서 어떤 방향으로 나아가고 싶은지를 알 수 있게 됩니다.

요즘에 해외로 나가는 많은 프로그램들이 있는데, 대부분이 미국과 호주, 일본에 집중이 되어 있고 그 중에서도 어학 프로그램이 주류를 이루고 있죠. 그래서 해외에서의 경험이라는 것 자체가 다시 폭이 좁아지게 됩니다.

그래서 요즘에 해외 경험 + 인턴쉽에 함께 도전하시는 분들이 많이 있는데, 그런 면에서 제가 많은 분들에게 추천을 드리는 곳이 인턴박입니다. 인턴박은 중국만을 전문으로 하고 있는데 주로 파견하고 있는 도시인 상하이가 중국 내에서는 가장 국제적이고 발달된 도시이기에 "서울과 비슷한 수준의 생활 환경" + "전혀 다른 문화 환경" 속에서 업무 경험을 쌓을 수 있는 기회를 제공해 주거든요.

베이징에 다녀왔습니다.

베이징에 다녀왔습니다. 지금 있는 상하이랑 정말 많이 다르더군요. 아직 잘 모르는 나라, 그리고 언어도 아직은 자유롭지 않은 나라에서 한 도시에 쉽게 익숙해져 버린다는 것이 과연 좋은 것인가, 라는 생각이 들어서 상하이를 벗어나서 북경에 꼭 가 보고 싶었습니다.

자금성이나 만리장성 등 유명한 곳들을 둘러 보는 것 자체도 정말 좋은 경험이었지만, 중국 내에서도 이렇게 다를 수 있구나 하는 것을, 예전에는 말로만 들었던 것을 직접 제 눈과 귀로 확인하고 올 수 있어서 정말 기뻤습니다.

아직은 잘 하지 못하는 중국어임에도 확실히 상하이 사람들과는 발음이 많이 다른 중국어, 그리고 기후와 말투, 생활 방식의 차이 때문인지는 몰라도 역시 상해 사람들과는 차이가 많이 나는 북경인들의 성격.

그리고 사람들의 성격이나 생활방식과는 별도로 놀라지 않을 수 없었던... 모든 것의 어마어마한 규모. 어째서 중국인들을 대상으로 하는 한국 내 관광 프로그램들이 인기가 없는지, 전에도 느꼈지만 이번에 북경에 가 보고 난 후에 절실히 깨달았습니다.

아시아에 처음 와 보는 서양인들이라면 한국에 처음 왔을 때 이것 저것 보면서 감탄을 멈추지 않을 수 있는 부분들이라도, 한국을 찾는 중국인들에게 자기 나라에도 다 있는, 그것도 양식도 비슷하고 규모 면에서도 섬세함 면에서도 역사 면에서도 결코 뒤지지 않는 '궁'이나 '산'이나 '섬'만을 보여주는 것은 그나마 가지고 있던 한국에 대한 좋은 인상을 보기 좋게 깨뜨려 주는 것과 다름이 없다는 생각이 들더군요. 중국인 단체 관광객들을 차림상이 정말 빈약한 한국 식당에 데려가서는 중국 내에서는 그 정도면 한국 돈 2000원이면 더 맛있게 먹을 수 있는데 5000원씩 내라고 하는 프로그램들, 외국인 한국 관광, 하면 아직도 경복궁과 인사동을 빼놓을 수가 없는 다양성의 부족들이 정말 아쉽게 느껴졌습니다.

하지만 그런 문제들과는 별도로 - 북경, 정말 와 보기 잘 했다는 생각을 하며 돌아왔고, 돌아오는 길에 다시 한 번 중국어 공부에 대한 욕심의 심지에 불이 붙었습니다. 선현우 화이팅!

제가 가장 좋아하는 video podcast 중의 하나인 Ask a Ninja (http://askaninja.com)의 Glabal Warming에 관한 에피소드입니다. 중국에 와서 찜통 같은 더위 속에 살고 있다 보니 (이곳은 원래 덥기는 하지만) '지구 온난화'라는 단어가 갑자기 생각이 나더군요. 그래서 가져왔습니다. Enjoy watching!

중국에서

중국에 잘 도착했습니다. 사실, 도착한 지 며칠이나 지났네요 ^_^ 초반에는 어딜 가든 항상 바쁘죠. 새로운 사람들을 만나고, 새로운 환경에 적응하고, 날씨에 적응하고... 다행히 서울과 이곳의 시차는 겨우 1시간. 이쪽이 한 시간 느립니다. 그래서 만약 서울이 오전 9시이면 여기는 아직 오전 8시인 거죠.

I've safely arrived in China. In fact, it's already been a few days since I got here. No matter where you go, you are always very busy for the first few days, right, meeting new people and getting used to new surroundings, and adjusting to the new weather(or weathers). The time difference between Seoul and here is fortunately only one hour, making it one hour later than Seoul. So if it's 9 a.m. in Seoul, it's still 8 a.m. where I am.

원래 제가 ever4one.hubweb.net에 호스팅 서버를 두고 why-be-normal.com의 도메인으로 링크를 시켰었는데 중국에서도 미국에서도 영국에서도 접속이 안 되어서 구글의 블로그로 이사를 왔는데, ^^ 다른 곳에서는 구글 블로그가 잘 접속되는데 중국에서는 ^^;;; 접속이 안 되는군요.

I used to have my hosting server at ever4one.hubweb.net and had it linked to the domain name of why-be-normal.com but I was told by many that my blog was not accessible from China, America and Europe, so I moved it to this google blog, and it's working fine now everywhere else but China. Haha. So I can't access it directly.

하지만 다행히도 구글에서는 Picasa를 이용해서 구글 블로그에 바로 포스팅을 직접할 수 있도록 해 주는 기능을 제공하죠. ^^ (휴~) 그리고 로그인까지 하려면 너무 느려서 잘 안 되지만 제 블로그에 글이 잘 올라갔나 하는 확인 정도는, http://anonymouse.org/라는 트래킹 방지 웹사이트를 이용하면 볼 수가 있어서, 이제부터 다시 글을 쓸 수 있을 것 같습니다. 답글은 모두 제 gmail 계정으로 자동으로 발송이 되기 때문에 읽을 수 있고... 나름대로 임시 방편 치고는 괜찮죠? ^^ 네이버(http://blog.naver.com/sacredhw) 블로그와 다음(http://blog.daum.net/ever4one) 블로그에도 대체적으로 같은 내용이 올라가기 때문에 네이버나 다음을 쓰시는 분들은 그곳에서 읽으셔도 되고요.

But I'm still lucky because google provides this function in Picasa with which I can post blogs while sorting and editing my photos (phew~) and there is also this anti-tracking website called anonymouse.org that enables you to access websites that are blocked by the local server, so I can at least check whether my posting has safely been uploaded or not. I guess I can restart writing now. And all the comments for my google blog is automatically sent to my gmail account, so that's pretty good too. That's not bad as a temporary solution, right? And of course you can read almost the same contents in my NAVER blog and DAUM blog as well.

이곳 날씨는 굉장히 덥네요. 간간히 비가 내리고 있기는 하지만, ^^ 기본적인 습기와 고온은 어쩔 수가 없네요. ㅎ

It's very hot here, although the occasional rain is cooling down the tempearture. But it's still basically very humid and hot.

다들 외국어 공부 열심히 재미있게 하고 계신가요? 저도 아직 많이 부족한 중국어이지만 매일매일 열심히 최대한 많은 말을 만들어 보고 써 보면서 실력을 쌓기 위해 노력하고 있어요. 조금씩 조금씩 ^^ 소식과 정보를 전해드릴게요!

상하이에 갑니다.

오늘 오전 인천 공항에 가기 전에 글을 남깁니다. 두달 계획으로 다시 상하이에 갑니다.

왜 또 가느냐는 주변 사람들의 걱정도 많았고 나도 가고 싶다라는 친구들의 부러움도 많았지만, 주변 사람들의 관심을 확인하고자 가는 것도 아니고 친구들에게 자랑하기 위해서 가는 것도 아닌, 순전히 제 자신을 위해 다시 한 번 타는 비행기이고, 이번에도 어떠한 일들이 저를 기다리고 있을지 기대가 됩니다.

1월과 2월에도 갔었던 상하이이지만, 외국어를 배우면서 제 나름대로의 방식으로 인생을 배워가고 있다고 믿는 저로서는, 상하이는 처음으로 '말이 잘 안 되면서 장기간 체류했던(두 달이 짧다면 짧긴 하지만)' 곳이고, 그동안 제가 가지고 있던 자신감이나 믿음 그리고 용기를 시험해 볼 수 있는 훌륭한 무대였습니다.

하지만, 후회를 하기에 인간이겠지만, 그래도 지난 번에 갔을 때 남았던 후회를 이번에 어느 정도 (욕심 같아서는 전부) 만회하기 위해 다시 갑니다. 일도 하게 될 것이고, 사람들도 많이 만나게 될 것 같고, 공부도 많이 하고 돌아오려고 합니다. 상하이에 가서도 블로그 활동은 지금처럼 열심히 할 것이고, 중국에서 만나는 외국인들에게 한국을 그리고 한국어를 열심히 알리고 돌아오겠습니다.

I'm flying out to Shanghai today. Some of you were asking me why I have to go there again, when I've already been there for two months last winter, and some of you say you envy me, but I'm not going to Shanghai just to drag attention or to make people envy me. I'm going there once again for the sake of myself, and I'm looking forward to all the things that are in store for me there. Of course I will have my regrets even after I come back, but before I have new regrets, I will first deal with the remaining regrets that I still have from my last trip - things I didn't do, or couldn't do, and people I couldn't meet, or didn't meet, and places that I didn't put my feet upon although I wanted to, those kind of regrets. I will of course be still blogging from China, so I hope you can somehow follow me to China through this blog. :D Thank you!

There is a first time for everything

There's a first time for everything, for example,

my first breakfast in China,




my first umbrella, milk, mutton, and beer in China




my first Internet cafe in China





my first subway ride in China






and my first freeze photo in China.




In general I am happy to see, find, hear and experience new things, but there are certain things that you would rather not want to experience at all, such as being pickpocketed in a foreign country. I mentioned this in the previous posting, but here are some photos from the day it happened to me.




Curtis, a cool b-boy from America whom I met online and finally met up in People's Square, sent me some of the photos he took when I was arguing with the cops in Nanjing Road.

I was walking down Nanjing Road with Curtis and Andrew, and on one side of the road there was a couple of poles that were a part of a building and people sort ot had to squeeze together to pass through that place, and I guess the thieves know this well enough to take advantage of it and the police was also aware of it, since more than three casual-clothes officers were hiding in the passers-by, waiting for something to happen.

While I was walking past the poles I felt a light pull on my backpack and when I looked around my electronic dictionary was gone from the side pocket of my bag, and behind a guy who was standing right behind me was another guy quickly disappearing from my sight but I saw one last inch of my e-dictionary in his right hand.

Panicked and embarrassed about what was happening, I didn't know what to do for the first two seconds, but then I pushed the guy behind me aside and grabbed the thief was trying to get away and yelled at him "Hey! What are you doing?" and my friends, who were walking about three meters ahead of me, looked back and saw me grabbing a guy in a yellow jacket by the collars and came over towards me. But even before they arrived before me, three cops came out of nowhere and handcuffed this thief, and held on to me so that I couldn't leave either.

At first I didn't believe they were real cops because they literally came out of nowhere, where were they? how did they get here so fast? as if there were Superman or something? but they showed me their badges and belts, and about two minutes later cops in uniforms came to the spot, and then I knew they were real cops.

I wanted to thank them and turn back and leave, since it was four o'clock and we still didn't have lunch, but the officers told me to come with them and didn't give me my e-dictionary back which they said they would just have a look what it was.

So that's when the arguing started, none of them spoke good English and none of us had good enough Chinese, so we were struggling to talk to one another, and finally we understood and people around us (there was a huge crowd surrounding us within 3 minutes) told me that I should come with them to the police station and write a testimony.

In what little Chinese I knew, I told the officers that 'I don't want to go, so just give me my e-dictionary back, and thank you, but don't worry, I'm alright, I want to go and have lunch with my friends, we are busy.'

They understood my sentences, but then nothing changed, they were pulling my arm and telling me to get in the patrol car. And at that point, for some reason, I wanted to find out what it really was all about and decided to cooperate, although I was sorry to my friends who were enjoying their holidays and had to come to the police station with me. And I appreciate their company and support - Andrew, Curtis, thank you guys!

These two officers wrote a three page report altother of what happened, how it happened, what I saw, what I looked like, what I was wearing, and who I was, and it took such a long time for them to finish writing and then they took it to someone who can type, and then had it printed on another piece of paper, and made me and Curtis sign.

They told me I would have to come back to the police station in two days to pick up my e-dictionary after it has been evaluated of its value and used as a reference to decide how many months this thief will get in prison, and I did go back, and got my dictionary back without any further trouble.

One thing to remember is you've got to be careful all the time with your belongings here in China, and if I carry things around my bag pockets like I am used to doing back home, that's as good as wanting to be pickpocketed. But I want to look on the bright side and think that China is fast becoming a safer and more secure society and on that day I was there in the middle of their efforts to do so, and it gave me a hands-on lesson about China.

I'm flying to Shanghai today

I am going to Shanghai, China, to stay there till the 21st of February, and that's a little short of two months.
I will try to write as much as possible from there, and of course even when I'm writing here I will be taking hundreds of photos everyday - all to come up here on my blog later on!
