나만의 전문성은 무엇일까

전문성을 가져야 한다

언제 어디에서 살면서 어떠한 일을 하던간에, 나만의 전문성을 갖춰야 한다는 사실은 불변의 원칙이다.

전문성을 갖추면 내게 부족한 자본과 아름다움을 채워 더 많은 사람들을 내 곁에 둘 수 있다는 사회성에 대한 이기적 욕구를 채울 수도 있을 뿐더러, 경제 원칙에 따라 나 자신의 '희소가치'가 높아지면서 소위 말하는 '힘'을 기를 수도 있다는 정치적인 욕구를 채울 수도 있고, 그리고 무엇보다도 가장 중요하고 또 중요해야 하는 이유인, 진짜 좋아하는 일을 즐기면서 생활을 영위하는 것이 가능해진다는 장점이 있다.

보통 전문성, professionality를 갖춘다고 하면 '남들보다 많이 알기 때문에 내가 그 자리에 꼭 필요하도록 만드는 것'을 생각하게 되지만, 그건 전문성의 가장 좁은 의미가 아닐까 싶다.

그냥 뭔가를 남들보다 많이 안다고, 많이 '파고 들었다고' 해서 그냥 전문가가 되는 것은 아니며 그것이 즉시 어떤 가치를 가지는 것도 아니다.

나만의 전문성을 갖추고, 그것이 내 삶에 이로움을 주기 위해서는
첫째, 가치가 있어야 하고,
둘째, 희소성이 있어 나를 쉽게 대체할 수 없어야 하고,
셋째, 오랜 시간이 가도 나를 모방할 수 없어야 한다.

그래서 내가 갖고 있는 전문성을 사람들이 필요로 하고, 그것을 내가 아니면 제공할 수 없으며, 다른 누군가가 나와 비슷한 업종에 뛰어들었다 하더라도 나를 능가할 수 없어야 한다.

시작 단계에서부터 최고가 되리라고 욕심 부리는 것이 얼마나 어리석고 덧없는 것일 수 있는지에 대해서는 나를 아끼는 많은 사람들이 근심 섞인 경고를 해주었고, 어느 분야에서든 당장 몇 년 안에 최고가 될 수 없을 거라는 것은 잘 알고 있다.

하지만 내가 계발할 수 있는 전문성이 무엇인가에 대한 끊임없는 고민들이 인생의 절반을 차지하는 '직업적 삶'에서 내가 어디를 향해 어떤 속도로 나아가고 있는지를 파악할 수 있게 해 줄 것이며, '시련은 있어도 결코 실패는 없는' 길로 나와 나의 파트너들을 이끌어 줄 것이다.

그렇다면 내가 가진 전문성, 아니 전문성의 요소들은 무엇일까?
지금 선현우라는 사람에게는 '전문성'으로 끌어올릴 수 있는 어떤 가능성들이 있는가?

나를 객관적으로 그리고 냉정하게 파악한다는 쉬운 일이 아니고 이렇게 공개적으로 글을 쓴다는 것이 부끄러운 일이기도 하지만 내 주변의 진실된 친구들이 나의 착각을 바로 잡아주고 나의 무지를 일깨워줄 수 있기를 바라며 나 자신에 대한 되도록이면 객관적인 평가들을 써 보려고 한다.

나, 선현우가 잘하는 것들은?

1. 외국어를 빠르게 배워서 구사할 수 있다

- 영어, 프랑스어를 이해하고 말할 수 있으며 일본어를 읽고 쓸 수 있다.
- 같은 시간을 투자했을 때 남들보다 빠르고 효과적으로 어떤 외국어든 배워서 구사할 수 있는 요령과 자신이 있다.(이것을 스스로 너무 의식하고 있으면 게을러질까 봐 걱정도 된다.)


2. 자료를 빠르게 검색하고 정리할 수 있다.

- 인터넷에서 남들이 잘 찾지 못하는 정보를 찾아내는 요령이 있고 이것을 컴퓨터를 이용해서 다양한 방법으로 빠르게 가공하고 정리할 수 있다.


3. 타고난 것은 아니지만 좋은 체력을 길렀다.

- 20대가 되어서야 시작했지만 비보잉과 꾸준한 운동으로 모든 활동에 바탕이 되는 체력을 탄탄하게 길렀기 때문에 어디에서 무슨 상황에 처해도 지쳐 쓰러지지 않고 일을, 때로는 위기를 처리해 나갈 수 있다.


4. 기획 아이디어가 풍부하며 기획안을 효과적으로 만들 줄 안다.

- 아무리 좋은 아이디어라도 전달이 되지 않으면 사람들의 협력을 얻어낼 수 없으니 훌륭하게 작성한 기획안은 언제 어디서나 큰 힘이 되어줄 것이다.


5. 내가 알고 있는 것을 다른 사람들에게 잘 가르쳐 줄 수 있다.

- 외국어, 컴퓨터, 운동, 비보잉 등, 내가 관심있어 하고 잘 하는 것들에 대해서 이해하고 활용하기 쉽도록 설명할 수 있어서, 무언가를 가르치는 직업을 갖는다면 분명 좋은 성과가 있을 것임을 알 수 있다.

위에 적어본 '내가 잘하는 것들'이 아직은 '전문성'이라고 부르기에는 미흡하며 아마추어 수준이라는 것을 잘 알고 있지만, 적어도 위의 다섯 가지에 있어서만은 내 자신에 대해 100% 확신을 갖고 있으며, 이들 장점들을 확실히 개발하고 확장해 나가다 보면 언젠가 모두 '통합'되는 시점이 있을 것이며, 그때가 나만의 [tipping point]가 될 것이라고 기대한다.




Professionality matters

No matter where I live or what I do, it's an undeniable truth that I need to have my own professionality.

Professionality allows me to meet my selfish social needs of having more people around me by balancing my lack of capital and beauty, to meet my political needs of building so called 'power' by making my scarcity value higher in the economic-principle-wise sense, and most importantly as it should be, to be able to make a living out of what I really enjoy doing.

Acquring professionality generally implies 'knowing more than others and making myself indispensible in certain places', but that is the simplest and narrowest meaning of professionality.

Just the fact that I know about something a lot more than others or that I got really 'into it' neither guarantees that I'm professional, nor does it signify any value.

In order for me to have my own professionality and benefit from it,
first, it must have a value,
second, it must have a scarcity so that I won't be replacable,
third, it must make me 'unimitatable' for a long time.

And people should need my professionality and I should be the only one to provide it, and I should remain competent and better than anyone who attempts to compete against me in the same field.

Many of my dear friends who care about me have been kind enough to warn me with their concerns how silly and meaningless it could be to begin with such high hopes as becoming the best, and I am well aware myself that it will make a good many years until I can find myself at the top in any field.

As 'work' or 'profession' represents a good half of one's life, however, my efforts
to find out what kind of professionality I can develop for my future will keep me
aware of in what direction I am headed and at what speed I am moving forward in this 'professional' part of life. And I am sure they will guide me and my dear partners to a road where 'I might be tried but can never fail.'

Then, what is my professionality? Or, what are the elements of professionality I have now?
What kind of potentials do I, Hyunwoo Sun, have that can be developed into professionality?

I know it is not easy to evalutate myself with objective and impartial standards, and it might look like a show-off to be writing it in public like this, but I am sure that I have some true friends who would be willing to break my illusions and alert me of my ignorance as I try to write about my own assets in view of professionality.

What is Hyunwoo Sun good at?

1. I am a fast learner of foreign languages.
- I can understand and speak English and French, and I can read and write Japanese.
- Given the same amount of time, I have both confidence and skills to learn to speak any language faster and more effectively than anyone else.(I am also worried that knowing this might stop me from trying harder.)

2. I am good at searching for data and organizing it.
- I know how to find the information from the Internet that others can't find easily, and how to organize and process that information or data in various forms to add value to it.

3. I wasn't born a Superman, but I've made myself strong enough.
- Although I started as late as in my early twenties, I've made myself stronger and stronger through b-boying and constant exercise, so I can handle the tasks or risks at hand without being knocked out easily.

4. I have ideas and know how to organize them into a convincing proposal.
- No matter how good an idea might be, it would not draw anyone's cooperation without being efficiently delivered. A well-written proposal or plan will always pay off.

5. I am really good at teaching.
- I can explain and make understood the things I am interested in and good at, such as foreign languages, computer, exercise, and b-boying. I am absolutely sure that I will make a good teacher if I ever become one.

I know I am still far from being good enough to claim professionality over the five things I've written above, but I am 100% confident of myself at least about those five things about myself. And I am expecting with high hopes that someday, if I continue working on these assets of myself, I will meet a [tipping point] of my own life when all these five elements will be 'integrated' into the professionality I am seeking now.
